purpose of morality
This question was posed to me by a patriotic singaporean who is currently serving the nation in army, alongside with an airhead who firmly opposes his religion of logic.
What is the purpose of morality? Seriously, this question never came across my mind. Morality seems so important in our daily living that i never questioned its purpose.
2 types of morality. Absolute, and relative. Absolute morality is where a superior being, like God, defines the clear lines of morality and all creation are to abide. Relative morality is where no one defines morality, but each one of us has our own definition of morality. Some ppl supports cloning, others dun. Some encourages abortion, others promotes the sanity of life..
Consider the world we live in. Why are laws important? Note that some laws do not interfere with moral standards, and some morals aren't defined in the law. But laws somehow represent the 'absolute morality' in a society. And it is important because among men, morality is relative, and to have order and stability in a society, there has to be laws that upholds certain moral values that the society in general finds important.
Laws come along with punishment so that rights can be protected effectively by ppl with authority.
Consider the spiritual world. God is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent. And it is He who defines morality. He defines what is right and what's not. If there's no such thing as morality, there won't be sin, there won't be sinners, and there won't be a penalty for sin, and there won't be sinners paying their price for sinning. If God loves us SO much, why not he just abolish this whole morality thingy..?
Morality in the spiritual realm, is as important as laws in the physical realm. It brings about social order and stability. Imagine having billions and zillions of ppl living under one roof in heaven with no moral standards. Everyone can do anything they want and it is impossible for healthy relationships to take place effectively. Your closest fren may backstab you the next moment and to him/her it's perfectly alright. There's nth we can do. OMG.
So, God's not a sadist God that instituted morality to see sinners suffer for their sin. And it's perfectly fone for God to define sin. Since he's the greatest entity. Alpha and Omega.
